artsCape Biennial 2010 (artsCape 2010)is an outdoor environmental sculpture exhibition to be staged at Clarkes Beach Reserve and Parklands; an exquisite natural setting in the heart of Byron Bay, NSW.It is a free event to be held over 16 days; from 26 June to 11 July 2010.
Approximately 70 professional sculptors from the region, across Australia and the world will create outdoor sculptures which convey messages about nature, the environment and sustainability. They will explore themes such as flora and fauna, ecology, marine conservation, water, air quality, the land and indigenous culture.Sculptures will vary in scale from the intimate to dramatic large scale statements framed by the back drop of Byron’s most famous beach.
World-class sculptors including Bert Flugelman andGreg Johns from Australia, Keizo Ushio from Japan, Phil Price from New Zealand, Usama Alnassar from Syria and Andy Scott from Scotland will join over 60 emerging, mid career and established artists.
Chosen for its natural beauty, accessibility for visitors and popularity with tourists and locals, the exhibition site will span approx. 1.5km of lush tree lined beachfront parklands, adjacent to Byron Bay’s town centre. The sculptures will be installed sympathetically within the Clarkes Beach site; suspended in trees, nestled in sand dunes, overlooking the ocean, amongst the Casuarinas, skillfully sited to show off this stunning natural setting at one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches.
In addition to the outdoor event, artsCape Biennial 2010 has partnered with Retrospect Galleries to present an indoor exhibition of Australian and international sculpture. The exhibition will feature small sculpture and maquettes from artsCape 2010's invited and selected artists. The indoor exhibition will be held from Friday June 11 - Friday July 7 2010.
