Bangalow is a historical village around 10 minutes’ drive west of Byron Bay with a population of approximately 1,000 people. The main street features historic buildings, cafes and restaurants as well as a friendly pub with plenty of interesting antique, craft and specialty shops.

Getting to Bangalow & Around

Take the Bangalow/Lismore exit from the Pacific Highway, about 12km south of the Byron Bay exit or 25km north of Ballina. From Byron Bay, take Bangalow Road out of town in a southerly direction. Take a right turn between the golf course and the rugby ground, follow the road up the hill and enter the village of Bangalow from the east after about 14km.

Things to Do & See in Bangalow

Bangalow has many events that draw locals and visitors alike, such as the Bangalow Show in November, and the Bangalow Billy Cart Derby which is held in May. Both events are high in community spirit and are a great day out for the whole family to experience.

On the fourth Sunday of each month, Bangalow comes alive to the market in the showgrounds. Perhaps the most popular market on the north coast, Bangalow is famous for its shady trees and grassy enclosure showcasing yet more of the region's art, craft and produce. There is also a shuttle bus that operates on market days to and from Byron Bay, a 20 minute drive away (by bus).

For nature lovers, there are a number of walking tracks in the surrounding areas, one of which winds along the edge of Byron Creek through a forest of strangler vines and huge mottled trees. For the kids, an old fashioned Billy Cart Derby is held in May along the main street where children bring their homemade carts and compete for line honours. A must try is the Bangalow Coffee, made from beans grown in surrounding hills.

Places to Eat & Drink in Bangalow

Bangalow has some amazing cafes and restaurants that are a must try on your visit. Popular places include – Utopia Cafe, Teh italian Diner, Town Café and Restaurant, Bang Thai, Bangalow Pizza Co., Choux Choux Patisserie, the fabulous Hrvest Cafe at nearby Newrybar and the list goes on! You can also sample the local food at stalls on the Sunday markets.
