48 hours in Byron Bay with kids

With pristine beaches, an array of family friendly dining and an almost endless choice of activities, it’s easy to spend weeks exploring everything Byron Bay has to offer. If you have a little less time than that, here are our top recommendations for the ultimate weekend of family fun in Byron.

DAY ONE

Morning

Take a five minute drive out of town and head to The Farm for alfresco breakfast and a play. Grab coffee and an exceptional pastry or two from Bread Social at the Farm, spread out the picnic rug and let the kids roam free, enjoying the playground and visiting the farm animals.

Head back to your accommodation, and take a stroll across to family friendly Clarke’s Beach. Gentle waves, powdery soft stretches of sand and more than the occasional pod of dolphins makes this beach the perfect way to while away the rest of the morning.

Midday

Wander back into town and hop on the world’s first solar train, for a short trip to North Byron. A few steps up the road from the train station is local favourite, the North Byron Hotel.  With an expansive outdoor garden eating area (complete with wooden playground to keep the little ones amused) and a range of fresh, delicious meals the whole family will love, this is our pick for a leisurely afternoon lunch.

Afternoon

For something truly unique to the Byron area, why not join Explore Byron’s tour of Cape Byron. Meeting on the beach, Bundjalung woman Delta Kay takes you on an easy walk to learn about significant places and hear traditional stories of the local people. Learn some Bundjalung language, taste some bush food and discover natural medicines, tools and artefacts. Perfect for the whole family.

Evening

After a busy day, there is no better place to wind down than on a picnic rug overlooking the ocean. Grab some easy takeaway - we love burgers from Main St burger bar, or fish and chips from Fishmongers - and while away the evening watching the excellent free musical entertainment on most evenings in Apex Park (next to the Byron Surf Life Saving Club).

DAY TWO

Morning

Take a stroll from your accommodation to local favourite TopShop. Grab excellent coffee, brekky bowls, bakery treats and breakfast rolls to either eat in or at the nearby beach.

Depending on which weekend you are visiting, you may be lucky enough to catch a local market to explore. We love the Byron market right in town on the first Sunday of the month or the Bangalow market on the 4th Sunday of the month. Find an array of quality local crafts, clothing, homewares, food, fresh produce and excellent live local musicians. Don’t forget to grab some lunch to keep the energy up while you stroll!

Afternoon

It’s time to hit the water. Depending on the age of the littlies, we can highly recommend joining a water based adventure this afternoon. Go Sea Kayak offer dolphin kayaking tours to watch dolphins frolick in the surf or Let’s Go Surfing will get everyone aged 5 and up enjoying the small gentle waves of The Pass all year round. Otherwise, you can’t beat the pleasures of a bucket and spade and a splash in the warm clear water!

Finish up your afternoon with a scoop or two from one of the many delicious handmade gelato bars in town - we love local favourite In the Pink (don’t miss the seasonal fresh strawberry or lemon cheesecake flavours).

Evening

Finish up your weekend in paradise with a laid back dinner at Treehouse. Enjoy incredible wood fired pizzas (and cocktails for Mum & dad) under the swaying palm trees before walking along Belongil beach back to your accommodation.
