Getting to Byron Bay

Byron Bay Travel and Transport

Byron Bay is an easy place to reach these days by plane, car, bus or train (with a coach connection). Byron Bay is part of the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales and is situated just off the Pacific Highway south of the NSW/QLD border. Byron Bay is approximately 800km north of Sydney and 170km south of Brisbane, but have a look at our map if your not familiar with the area. Byron Bay township is small and quite flat so getting around by foot or pushbike can be a great alternative, depending on where your accommodation is located of course..

By plane - The closest airport to Byron Bay is the Ballina / Byron Gateway Airport which is just 36km south of Byron. This offers direct flights from both Sydney and Melbourne through Virgin Blue, Jetstar, and Rex (Regional Express).

Lismore Airport is 40km to the west of Byron Bay offers a limited number of flights, however Gold Coast Airport which is 80km to the north (just over the QLD border) is a good alternative and may offer a larger number of flights.

Brisbane Airport will be the obvious choice for international travelers and is less than a 2 hour drive from Byron Bay. All of these airports offer shuttle services direct to your Byron Bay accommodation however we suggest you book transfer prior to flying - see Airport Transfers

By car - A recent upgrade to the main expressway makes Byron Bay a 45 minute drive from the Gold Coast Airport and less than 2 hours drive from the Brisbane CBD and airport. Sydney is around a 10 hour drive south of Byron Bay. There are several options for Car hire in Byron Bay including Byron Bay Car Hire and Rentals, Hertz Byron Bay, Simmo's Car Hire, Wicked Campers, Vroom Vroom Vroom, Earth Car rentals and Byron Bay Limousines .

By Bus - Byron’s bus depot is in the centre of town and most of the larger coach companies have regular services to Byron Bay.  Byron Bay and its suburbs and surrounding villages are serviced by bus and coach transport through Blanch's Bus Company. Blanch’s provides specialised transport to major events and festivals and regular route services throughout the district. The Happy Coach has day tours to Nimbin where you can experience a unique insight into the Hippy Era.  The Magic Bus (pictured above) and the London Classic Red are double decker coaches offering bus transport services and hire in Byron Bay.

By train - Countrylink offers a network of trains and coaches services to Byron Bay from Melbourne and Brisbane, with links to other parts of NSW.
